Chapter 1: Tears in the Classroom
Something is very wrong.
On Friday morning, the bell rang, and the GATE class hurried into the room. Aria C. was first, like always. But she stopped so fast that Van R. bumped right into her backpack.
"Whoa," Van whispered. "Look at Mr. Lehmkuhl."
Their teacher was sitting at his desk. His shoulders were slumped. He was holding a tissue, and his eyes were red and puffy. A tear rolled down his cheek.
Mr. Lehmkuhl NEVER cried. He was the teacher who told silly jokes and did a happy dance when someone solved a hard problem.
"Mr. Lehmkuhl, are you okay?" asked Keira C.
He sniffled and gave a tiny smile. "I'm fine. Please take out your reading books." Then he blew his nose. HONNNK!
The six friends looked at each other. Jasmine W. raised one eyebrow. Shiloh D. frowned. Lily D. took out her detective notebook.
"He is NOT fine," Lily whispered. "Something happened. And we're going to find out what it is."
"Detective team," said Aria, "let's get to work!"

Chapter 2: The Search
The detectives look everywhere for clues.
At recess, Mr. Lehmkuhl stayed in the classroom. The detectives made a plan.
"Maybe he lost something important," said Keira. "Let's check his backpack and his desk."
"And let's ask the principal," said Jasmine. "Principals know EVERYTHING."
"I'll look in his car window," said Van. "But no touching!"
"We'll look all over the school, too," said Shiloh. "Let's GO!"

Chapter 3: Did WE Forget Something?
A brand-new idea.
After lunch, the detectives met at the back table. They spread out all their clues.
"A star on the calendar. A note that says 8:00. A gold balloon ribbon," said Aria. "And the principal said he was EXCITED this morning."
"So he was happy before school," said Keira slowly. "And then he got sad."
Jasmine tapped her chin. "Wait. What if Mr. Lehmkuhl didn't lose anything? What if... WE forgot something?"
Everyone gasped.
"Look at the whiteboard!" said Shiloh. In the corner, four sticky notes had fallen off and were lying on the floor. Someone had written on each one, but now nobody could remember which note went where.
"If we put the notes back in order," said Lily, "maybe we'll remember!"
🧩 Puzzle 2: The Fallen Sticky Notes
Four friends each wrote ONE sticky note last week. Each note had a different time and a different place. Put them back together!
When the notes were back in order, Aria gasped. Her own sticky note said: "8:00 a.m. — P.E. room! 🎈 Don't be late!"
"The P.E. room at 8:00," said Van. "That was BEFORE school today!"
"We were supposed to be somewhere," whispered Keira. "And we all forgot."

Chapter 4: Coach Keeps a Secret
Something happened in the P.E. room.
The detectives raced to the P.E. room. Coach was blowing up a dodgeball.
"Coach, what was happening in here at 8:00 this morning?" asked Shiloh.
Coach stopped pumping. Coach crossed both arms and looked at the six friends for a long time.
"Well," Coach said, "NONE of you showed up this morning."
"Showed up for WHAT?" asked Van.
Coach shook a finger. "Nope. That's all I'm saying. You'll have to figure it out yourselves." Then he went back to pumping the ball. Pfft. Pfft. Pfft.
"Okay," whispered Jasmine. "Let's search this room. Carefully."
🧩 Puzzle 3: The P.E. Room Search
Four detectives each searched a different spot and each found a different thing. What did they find?
The detectives put everything they found in a pile: streamers, a party hat, cake crumbs, and a popped balloon.
"A party," whispered Shiloh. "There was a PARTY in here this morning!"
"But whose party?" said Keira. "And why was it at 8:00?"
They walked back to class, thinking hard. Mr. Lehmkuhl was bending down to pick up a pencil. And that's when Lily D. saw it: a folded card sticking out of his back pocket, covered in balloons and bright letters...
Lily's mouth fell open. "Oh no," she whispered. "Oh no, no, NO."

📖 Chapter 5: Case Closed
The six detectives walked up to Mr. Lehmkuhl's desk together.
"Mr. Lehmkuhl," said Aria, "we solved a mystery today. It was YOUR birthday. And we planned a surprise party for you in the P.E. room at 8:00... and then we all forgot to go."
"We're SO sorry," said the whole team.
Mr. Lehmkuhl was quiet for a moment. Then he laughed, a big, happy laugh, and wiped his eyes.
"I waited in the P.E. room with Coach and a whole cake," he said. "I thought maybe you didn't care about me."
"We DO care!" said Shiloh. "We just have terrible memories!"
Just then, the door swung open. Coach walked in carrying the cake, and the principal was right behind him with a big bunch of gold balloons.
"I SAVED it," said Coach, grinning. "Took you detectives long enough!"
The whole class sang "Happy Birthday" as loud as they could. Mr. Lehmkuhl did his famous happy dance. And this time, the only tears in the room were happy ones.
