How to play

Watch Penny the coin show you everything: how moves work, and all three kinds of puzzles.

Turn your sound on. The words also show under the video.

Three kinds of puzzles

Try the little boards below, then jump in with the buttons. Pick a kind any time from the menu at the top.

Shape Shift

Move a few coins to change one shape into another. The trick is to spot which coins can stay right where they are. The new shape can sit anywhere on the dots.

Line Up

A line is 3 or more coins in a row with no gaps. Lines can go across, up and down, or diagonal. How many lines are in this H?

Flip It

When you flip a coin, the coins touching it above, below, left, and right flip too. Tap the coins in this picture to see how it works.

Rather read it? Open the steps
  1. 1Read the job. Every puzzle tells you what to make and how many moves you get, like "Move 2 coins to make 3 lines."
  2. 2Count your moves. Each gold coin at the top is one move. Plan before you use them!
  3. 3Make your moves. Drag, tap, add, remove or flip coins on the board.
  4. 4The page checks. When your moves run out, it checks your work. Not solved? It starts over, so think first!

Four kinds of moves

Move

Drag a coin to an empty dot. Or tap the coin, then tap the dot.

Remove

Tap a coin to take it away.

Add

Tap an empty dot to put a new coin there.

Flip

Tap a coin to turn it over.

Teacher note

There are puzzles: Shape Shift, Line Up and Flip It. Each set runs from warm-up to brain buster.

Every puzzle can be solved in exactly the number of moves in the directions, and never in fewer. The page does not use one fixed answer. It checks the finished board, so any correct answer is accepted. In Shape Shift the new shape may sit anywhere on the dots, but it may not be turned.

When the moves are used up, the page checks the board, tells the student what is still wrong, and starts the puzzle over if it is not solved. A gold star on a puzzle means it was solved on the first try.

Optional supplies: about 15 pennies or counters for each pair, so students can test ideas on the desk before they spend moves on the screen. Two-color counters work well for Flip It.

Progress and badges are saved on this computer only.
